The Sensory Garden Project

Our Sensory Garden project is a collaboration between Little Miracles Cambridge, Ely & Newmarket and Cambridgeshire County Council.

After a year in the making and the consideration of many factors, it develops an area approximately 180ft x 80ft behind the offices of Little Miracles CEN at Ely Community Centre. An environment that will literally be to the benefit of thousands of people, supporting children, disabilities and different generations.

The solution is very much focused on offering many different sensory experiences that the different children, families and people the centre supports can benefit from through all seasons.

The senses has very much been the primary consideration in our thoughts. Our collaborated plans centre around the provision of lots of colour, the introduction of different ranges of smells, musical considerations for sound and of course a multitude of different textures to experience. We are catering for many different sensory needs and types of disabilities within the design. The garden, it’s access and pathways are all wheelchair friendly.

The project is very much community focused from concept through to design and delivery. We also expect it’s development to take on different stages over time as it settles and evolves to bring in new areas. A project that offers continual engagement.

The Phase 1 delivery of the Sensory Garden is presently scheduled for  the middle of October 2016, subject to groundworks.

Working with us…

A number of local companies and organisations have already committed to working with us on the project and have done so in many ways. The donations and the support that the project has received has come in the form of fundraising, monetary donations, provision of equipment and supplies, through to organisations staff members committing their time.

On behalf of everyone involved in the project, we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has come together to support the project and help make a difference in the community.

“We are really excited about the project and it’s delivery. It is a fantastic development for Ely Community Centre and the community that surrounds it and utilises the building. It is equally wonderful to see how that community and the organisations around us have come together in such a positive way to help make an idea very much a reality for the access of so many, one that will benefit generations for years to come.”

Justin Heron
Operations Manager, Little Miracles CEN

“This is a great piece of partnership working which will benefit everyone in the community, not only those who currently use our services and access Ely Community Centre.

We look forward to a lot of hard work in putting it all together, with people who are as committed as we are in providing a great community space for the future.”
