Wednesday June 8th saw Ely City FC swap their football boots for cricket bats as they took to the field to take on Wilburton Cricket Club in a T20 Charity Match, raising in the region of £500 for Little Miracles CEN in the process.
The match wasn’t only an enjoyable sunny evening and fantastic success but once again showed what great community support exists in the local area. Wilburton CC headed into bat first playing some fine shots along the way and tabling 138-4 for Ely City FC to chase down. The Robins proved they were equally adept with a cricket bat as they are in the penalty area as they finished up on 186-4 to take the game. Tom Williams played a fantastic innings for Ely as he retired at the half century mark.
With individual overs being sponsored, players donating money to play and paying for the likes of 6’s and dropped catches a really enjoyable game was put on for the locals with a BBQ and Beer available while they did. The teams for Ely and Wilburton are indeed a true credit to the area. Will Wilburton CC take on Ely City FC at football next time around? We shall see. Be it football or cricket, it will certainly be more than worth going to see.
Martin Grey, Asst Manager for Ely City FC said – “‘Ely City FC were pleased to be able to work in partnership with Wilburton CC to to run a fun charity cricket match raising money for Little Miracles. As a club we are keen to show our support towards the local community in events like this’.
